Who writes what, and pays back how much

The biggest company writes 22 times what the smallest does. Both declare it to the same regulator, on the same standard template.

There is no public price list in Greece, but there is one public figure per company: the annual Solvency and Financial Condition Report (SFCR) every insurer files with its regulator. Its standard annex gives gross written premium and gross claims incurred, by line of business - two of those lines are motor.

Sixteen companies write motor in this comparison. Two, Anytime and Ορίζων, file no report of their own - one is a channel and the other an absorbed company of Interamerican - and their numbers are the whole of Interamerican's, not their own.

There is no vehicle count in an SFCR, so no average premium comes out of it. What does come out is scale, and a loss ratio - how much of what a company collects it pays back out in claims.

€974m total motor premium, 14 companies

5 filings read by hand, each for its own reason

Five filings, five reasons

Nine of the fourteen reports we read automatically, from scratch at every update: their standard annex carries the column codes C0040 and C0050, and from those we find motor third-party liability and other motor. For the other five this does not work:

Ydrogios and Generali print the same annex with descriptive headings instead of codes. ERGO prints it as a page image, not text. Interamerican does not include the annex in its public report at all - the figures here come from its narrative chapter, in net rather than gross claims. Hellas Direct is Cyprus-licensed and writes motor in both Greece and Romania; the figure here is its own declared premium for Greece alone, with no matching claims figure.
