How much more expensive car insurance got

General inflation rose 23.9% since 2015. Car insurance stayed essentially where it was: 0%.

The ΕΑΕΕ yearbook gives one price a year, a year late. This index gives the shape in between - monthly, since 1996, from Eurostat , the same series that ages the market figures in how we calculate.

Both indices measure the same thing - 2015 = 100 - so their height compares directly.

The turning point of 2021

Car insurance gets cheaper almost every year from 2015 to 2021, a drop of 6.6%. Then it reverses: 8.2% by 2024, before easing slightly again.

General inflation does not move like that at all - it rises almost every year, with its biggest jump in 2022. The two curves start from the same point in 2015 and end 26 points apart.

The market grows, even when the price does not

The index above says what the same cover costs. It says nothing about how much money enters the market overall - and that, unlike the index, is rising cleanly: the Bank of Greece publishes the real gross written premium and claims for motor, in euro, for Greek-licensed companies.
